Masturbating with a vibrator for the first time
Every person goes through many ‘first times’ in their life, including everything that has to do with sexuality. In our new series ‘My First Time’, women describe their first time: kissing someone of the same sex, having a threesome, having an affair, or having sex under the influence. Linda (37) works for Pabo Magazine as a freelance writer. In this article she talks about masturbating with a vibrator for the first time.
The vibrator: the oldest and most popular sex toy
The origin story of the vibrator is actually quite sad. People used to think many women suffered from something called hysteria. This ‘affliction’ was explained in various ways. According to some, hysteria meant that the uterus was floating around in the body, making the woman short of breath, which is why she breathes heavily during an orgasm. Others said it was a lack of sexual pleasure. No matter the reason, people believed it was a persistant chronic illness that about 75% of all women suffered from. Hysteria couldn’t be cured, but it could be treated. The solution: paroxysm. This meant stimulating the genitals until the muscles started to contract out of ‘pain and pleasure’. After that, the woman was cured for a while. However, physicians found this to be a time-consuming and intense task. Since self-pleasure was still forbidden at that time, more and more (medical) tools became available on the market.
From medical tool to sex toy
The first vibrator was available on the medical market around 1880, and later there were also vibrators with a power cord that could be used at home. Vibrators were widely advertised, but using them remained taboo for many decades. For a long time, wand massagers were sold as massage devices for example, even though they were mostly used for clitoral stimulation. It wasn’t until Sex and the City aired and progressive women showed up in the media that the use of vibrators became more and more normalised. Nowadays, many women visit sex shops, organise some sort of Tupperware parties for vibrators, or order their toys online.
My first vibrator
I vividly remember seeing a real vibrator for the first time: I was going to help a friend move house. When I got there, everything still had to be packed in boxes. We were lazy students back then, so that was to be expected. And that’s how I came across her turquoise bullet vibrator: a small and thin toy that made me think: can that be enough? I thought I was very progressive. I went on dates regularly and I had had multiple partners, but I didn’t own a vibrator. And at that moment my friend decided to get me one for my birthday. I was grateful for that, because I didn’t have the courage to visit a sex shop on my own to buy a toy. Of course this was before there were online shops.
To the sex shop
So that’s what we did: we were going to buy a vibrator. Back then, I was living in Zwolle around the corner of a Christine Le Duc shop, so we went inside, giggling. It only took us a few minutes to buy the, more or less, largest vibrator we could find. One with a realistic design and, for fans of Sex and the City, the size of a big pepper mill.
I like big dicks and I cannot lie
Well, what can I say? I like big dicks and I cannot lie. My friends knew about my love for big penises. They witnessed me flirting with a black man, just to see if the ‘rumours’ are true. It turned out they are by the way. But back to my first vibrator: it generated a lot of laughter within my group of friends, but also much interest among my male friends and dates.
Masturbating with a vibrator for the first time
Up to that moment, for me masturbation was limited to clitoral stimulation with my fingers. My first vibrator changed that of course. That very same night, I wanted to try it out. I was already aroused enough, so with a little lubricant, it effortlessly glided inside. I could change the vibration speed with a button. Still there was something missing. No, my first experience wasn’t very arousing. I quickly found out I could only enjoy it if I was already sufficiently aroused. Erotic stories were my cup of tea, much more exciting than porn. So while reading a story, I tried again. Reading and fingering, I enjoyed the vibrations and the incredible filled-up feeling the vibrator gave me. My orgasms were more intense when I used a vibrator. Not long after that, I decided to use it while having sex with one of my dates as well.
The evolution of vibrators
After my first vibrator, which was battery-operated and had a somewhat chemical smell, I decided to go for a couple toy: the We-Vibe Chorus. This toy focusses more on clitoris stimulation, which I like best. You can even wear it while having sex, so you and your partner can both enjoy it. The toy is USB-rechargeable and in general feels more durable and modern than my first vibrator, which I tossed in the bin a while ago.
My experience with Womanizer
A couple of years ago, Womanizer launched the first air pressure vibrator. A revolutionary toy that stimulates your clitoris with air pressure waves. I didn’t think much of it and I thought it was quite pricy as well, but after reading many glowing reviews, and the launch of the Womanizer Duo, I decided to go for it anyway. I can honestly say that toy was the best thing I ever bought. The Duo is a vibrator that every woman deserves. Masturbating with the Duo vibrator for the first time was so intense that I thought I would explode. This vibrator stimulates both your clitoris and your G-spot and I had an orgasm that went on for minutes. It probably won’t surprise you that I now use it on a regular basis.
Masturbating with a vibrator: solo and in a relationship
Masturbating with a vibrator: I think it’s fantastic. It’s a great addition to your sex life for more excitement and pleasure, both with a partner and during solo play. I regularly travel alone and it’s better for my relationship to use my sex toy than have sex with another man. The Womanizer Liberty is still on my wishlist by the way, because this is a smaller toy with a practical cover, which makes it perfect for travelling. And fantasizing is always fun!
