If your relationship has ended and you feel sad about it, we talk about having a broken heart. It feels awful: it’s not easy to just get over the end of a relationship. Even if you’re the one who decided not to go on together. Still, visualisation techniques can help you to heal your broken heart.

Healing a broken heart: speeding up the process

We’ve all experienced heartbreak. The feeling of disappointment, despair, anger, and sadness can be overwhelming. The good news is that you can speed up the process of healing your broken heart! You can do this by using visualisation techniques. We realise that these exercises may not be suitable for the most down-to-earth people. However, there’s no harm in seeing if one or more of these exercises can help you. And if an exercise doesn’t suit you, just skip it.

The power of visualisation techniques

For the best results, you should repeat the same exercise over several days, but you can also choose to do a different exercise each day. Each of the exercises described below only take around 5 to 10 minutes, but you can also choose to spend a bit longer (20 or 30 minutes) on healing yourself.

Visualisation techniques are simple. You only need a safe and comfortable place where you can sit or lie down. Start with 3 deep breaths in and out, relaxing your body from your toes to your crown. Always do this exercise first, to shut out noises and thoughts and to allow your body to relax.

Healing a broken heart: draw your heart

For this visualisation exercise, you need a piece of paper and a pen. Draw a heart on the paper. Take a deep breath, relax, and close your eyes. Visualise a crack, breakage, discolouration, or a piece that has broken off from the heart. Open your eyes and draw what you saw in front of you when you thought of your own broken heart and write the name of the person who broke your heart next to it. Choose to draw one thing at a time. Next, think about how you feel seeing your broken heart on paper. Do you feel surprised, uncomfortable, or angry with yourself, or do you discover a wall that you’ve built to protect your heart? Try to draw out this feeling as well.

The conclusion of this exercise:

  • Did you ignore any red flags in the past? For example, could you have set clearer boundaries to avoid having your heart broken? Have compassion for yourself: everyone makes mistakes. By recognising your mistakes, you can hopefully avoid a similar situation next time.
  • Is there nothing that you could’ve done differently? Accept that it’s time to let go. Be kind to yourself and consciously choose to let go of your misery. You can do the last exercise in this overview to heal your heart.

Your own healing angel

This exercise also starts with taking a deep breath to relax. Close your eyes to focus on your inner space. Open your heart to welcome your own personal healing angel. Ask the angel to help you heal your broken heart. This healing process helps you to let go of emotional pain, but also to let go of anyone who has ever hurt you or caused you discomfort. It’ll feel as if a burden has been lifted from your shoulders. You may not realise exactly what’s happening during the healing process – all is welcome, including falling asleep.

Use the pink light of love

Close your eyes and relax. Imagine the pink light of love cleansing your body and energy field. The light settles in every corner of your body and fills it with its loving presence. Take a few deep breaths and feel your heart fill with love and embrace universal love. Every place that was once wounded is healed and filled with loving energy.

Healing a broken heart with the help of your ancestors

In this visualisation, you call upon your ancestors to heal your heart. It feels good to be surrounded by people who love you. Think of the people in your family who are no longer with you and with whom you were closest, or of the relatives you’ve been told about who could be helpful. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out. Ask your ancestors – out loud or in your thoughts – to heal your broken heart. Imagine your loved ones appearing in your room to share their love. Imagine their hands on your body, sharing their positive and loving energy with you. During and after this process, you’ll realise that you’re never alone.

A blooming rose to heal your heart

The purpose of this visualisation technique is to heal your broken heart and open it up again. Imagine a rosebud, with its petals still closed, in the centre of your heart chakra (on your chest). Because your heart is broken, it’s as tightly closed as the rosebud. You had a good reason to protect your heart, but now it’s time to start healing. Tell yourself it’s time to move on with your life. Then imagine your heart opening like a rose: petal by petal. With every rose petal that unfolds, your heart heals a little more. When the flower is in full bloom, try to absorb the scent of the rose. This scent symbolises the healing you’ve been waiting for.
