Rock-hard abs, arms of steel or a Chris Hemsworth face? No, women are not that superficial. In fact, there are plenty of things women find sexy that have absolutely nothing to do with sex or looks. From humour and dogs to old-fashioned decency, we’ve made a list of the most striking non-sexual turn-ons. Use them to your advantage, guys!

Rock stars and good genes

From The Beatles to The Backstreet Boys and One Direction; from Jim Morrison to Kurt Cobain and Pharrell: women find creativity sexy. And one of the best ways to get your creativity out there in a sexy way is by writing music, playing in a band and picking up that microphone. At least, that’s what a study from the University of Pennsylvania shows. On its own, it’s hardly earth-shaking news: we all know the allure of the rock star who smashes his guitar or sings about heartbreak. And we’ve all seen groups of young girls and women swooning  as soon as their favourite star takes the stage.

Talented babies

The University of Sussex also investigated why women are attracted to musicians and they linked some additional findings to it. They discovered that the  attraction to musicians was at its highest during women’s most fertile period. Why? Because they subconsciously believe that men with strong musical qualities have better genes.

The preference for composers of complex music only came when the 1,500 women who took part in the study were at the their most fertile. A bit like women who fall for extra ‘masculine’ men only when they’re ovulating. The researchers see it as proof of Darwin’s theory that the primary function of music is procreation. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro as the ultimate attempt at seduction? Maybe so.

Incidentally, we can vividly imagine that this also applies to the other arts. Why else would types like Picasso, Woody Allen and John Lennon have had thousands of women chasing them? If men can create complex and intelligent art, it means that they possess certain cognitive qualities. A mingling of that genius seed with your yearning egg could mean huge genetic advantages for the baby.

Sexy is simple

No worries, that doesn’t mean that all men have to get into leather pants and climb on stage. There are so many rock stars out there and most women have enough sense of reality not to be blinded by yet another piece of on-stage candy. Besides, it’s not that women only fall for the sexually charged seductions of male beauty. Besides charm and sex appeal, there are countless non-sexual things that women find attractive: weird things, like men walking barefoot through the grass or being fascinated by a book.

Humour on the playground

For example, online platform Askmen asked 2,000 women (and one man and one non-binary person) what they found sexy about men. Remarkably, it didn’t take much in the way of fancy to make the participants week in the knees. After all, there are very simple ways that men can set themselves apart from the average guy.

In fact, most men don’t even realise how quickly they can get with a woman by paying a bit more attention to certain qualities. Sometimes, the simplest gesture and a few friendly, confident words are enough to blow a woman away. And sometimes it’s not even necessary to actually do anything. Women can get butterflies just by looking at a man who’s not aware of her presence. When he’s doing chores around the house or something like that. Or if he’s playing with his child. Yes, involved fathers are, as we all know, a huge turn-on.

Humour? That’s always good too. But we don’t mean immature, ambiguous jokes, but men who can be sharp, intelligent and funny. A man who makes you laugh: it doesn’t get any sexier!

1: Show interest

Women find it sexy when men are curious. When they ask how their day was, when they want to know things about the people in their lives and when they simply listen to what a woman has to say. What they find less attractive? Men who lie on the sofa with a crate of beer watching the telly.

Or men who always have to be the one talking, bragging about everything and not listening to women. Men who take up all the space in order to grab a woman’s attention are sooooo 1950. Women no longer look up in adoration to a man who is persistent. They find it much sexier if that persuasive man can keep his trap shut for once and lets them do the talking.

3: Open up to others

Unapologetic sexists, chauvinists and racists? A lot of women don’t really like them. Which is a good thing, as the world could easily do without them. They do, however, fall for men who are self-confident.

For men who don’t need to corner others to make themselves feel superior. Is he open to other cultures, other sexual identities and typically female topics? Then he certainly has an advantage.

4: Being responsible

Okay, some women suffer from incorrigible helper syndrome. These ladies won’t be able to resist  an unwashed, overly drunk loser shuffles past. But most women like it when a man keeps his affairs in order.

This doesn’t mean that he necessarily has to have an extremely good job with a flashy pad. Simple signs of maturity and a developed sense of responsibility can also pique interest: like being able to cook well, a house that isn’t covered in mould and weeks-old pizza boxes and taking an equal role in the family for granted. Pretty doable, right?

5: A sharp edge

At the same time, some women don’t fall for shabby and helpless types, but for the typical bad boys. Men who don’t care much about the world and who are not ashamed of their macho ideas and behaviour. While most women understand that a future with such a rough type has little chance of success, somewhere deep inside they feel aroused when a guy like that walks into the pub.

But what do you do if you’re a good guy? A man who walks through life always as neat and tidy as a whistle? Try to get a bit of a sharp edge. Don’t be afraid to chop wood, burst out laughing and radiate self-confidence and a little bit of shamelessness. An uncompromising man can be very sexy.

6: On the hobby

A man reading a book, creating a coffee table from wood, or tuning his guitar? Irresistible, really. Most women find it attractive when a man has a hobby and can get totally absorbed in something. Passion is a real turn-on, especially when a man seems to have a talent for something. That same passion is also sexy when it shines through in what a man has to say. Women love it when a man talks with passion about the things he loves. Whether it’s his ambitions, his friends, or his hobbies, it says something about his character and zest for life when he does so with obvious enthusiasm.

7: Scent is everything

Is there a common denominator? Certainly, most women appear to be very sensitive to scents. Not surprising, as nice smells push the finest emotions to the surface. The right fragrance can make a woman want to tear off your clothes. Nothing more seductive than a compelling fragrance.

However, an unpleasant fragrance can really put a woman off. So don’t spray yourself with just any cologne, but look for a fragrance that suits you perfectly. And don’t overdo it. The best thing is the smell of a good aftershave or cologne, combined with the faint scent of fresh sweat and freely flying pheromones. Your own body odour, provided it’s not too penetrating, will always be the best seduction.
