What are those bumps on your areola and what are they for?

The importance of regularly checking your breasts is clear to most women. If there’s something wrong, you’ll discover this much faster when you regularly look at and feel your breasts. That’s why it’s also good to know what your breasts look like exactly and what the function of each part is. Take the bumps on your areola for example: what are they and what are they for?

What are those bumps on your areola?

The bumps on your areola (the round, coloured area around your nipples) have a name: Montgomery glands. The bumps produce a natural oily fluid that regulates the pH value of your breasts. It also protects the nipples from infections and lubricates the areola.

Is it normal to have bumps on your areola?

Yes, it’s normal to have or get bumps around your nipples. Your body changes throughout your life because of hormonal changes. During menstruation, pregancy, or menopause, your breasts can look different. It’s possible that you get more bumps or that they become smaller or larger. During pregnancy for example, your breasts already start to prepare for breastfeeding in the first trimester.  If you’re very stressed, your breasts’ sebaceous glands can become more visible. This also goes for pores on your face. During hormonal changes, Montgomery glands protect the sebaceous glands of your breasts with their natural oil.

Discomfort caused by bumps on the areola

Do the bumps on your areola cause discomfort, for example because one of the glands seem to be blocked? When a gland is blocked, it fills with white sebum. Normally, this works itself out over time. Don’t touch it, as this can cause an infection. If it doesn’t go away or it causes discomfort, ask your GP for advice.

Breast hygiene

Your breasts are trapped in a bra all day. This can make them sweaty, as the temperature in your bra easily rises. In order to prevent acne and changes in your glands, wash your breasts regularly with a neutral soap. Sweat, oil, and acne can be removed or prevented this way. Change your bra very regularly as well, so your breasts can at least enjoy clean fabric. Finally, it’s important to wear a right size bra. This prevents irritation and damage of the nipples.
